The FBI’s Next Generation Identification (NGI) Iris Services offers a highly accurate national iris identification system, providing rapid iris enrollment and search capabilities. As of February 2024, the NGI Iris Service repository contained over 3.7 million sets of iris images. These images are collected and submitted by local, state, tribal, and federal agencies upon arrest booking and by correctional agencies during their intake process. While iris identification capabilities are utilized throughout the law enforcement and intelligence communities, the primary usage of the NGI Iris Service continues to be in the corrections environment. Fingerprints and iris images are obtained during intake procedures and submitted to the state and the FBI. During the transfer or release process, iris images are again obtained and searched against the NGI Iris Service repository to assist with ensuring the correct inmate is being transferred or released. When a pre-release iris search returns an identification, it includes a rap sheet, mugshot (if available), and National Criminal Information Center data from the Wanted Person, National Sex Offender Registry, and Immigration Violator files. When existing warrants are identified, this allows for the releasing entity to contact the wanting agency and coordinate any necessary action.
